No sharing of outside links (ie Dropbox) to content obtained through HyperSpin, RocketLauncher, or Emumovies' FTP or websites - Both sites offer free access people should make use of appropriate download sections. No links to, or discussions about, pre-loaded drive sellers - a vast majority of these are either scams, badly outdated, flat out not working, or some combination of the three. Discussions & comments regarding ROM and tracker sites are not allowed. No links to torrents or direct links to ROMs. So whilst an intermediary program isn't always needed, it helps you wrap special cases and extra features. lights, special arguments for certain games, etc. AttractMode could launch the emulator directly, but the launcher I've made handles lots of other things which would be fiddly to do otherwise, e.g. My chain is AttractMode > My Launcher > Emulator (i.e. I've done the same thing myself although via different programs. Only RocketLauncher isn't technically needed, but often adds functionality or extra security if things need to be set up in a wonky fashion. RetroArch loads the game core and handles loading/saving and input. RocketLauncher handles any weirdness that needs to be done before and after loading a game when it's requested. The chain you're describing would basically work like this: RetroArch isn't really on the same level as most frontends, it's barebones and I'm happy that it's that way because we don't really need another frontend. RetroArch is what loads the core, a core is just a library on its own and has to be loaded through a libretro compatible program, e.g. Or should I skip RetroArch and try to have RocketLauncher launch cores/emulators directly? Either way if you intend to use HyperSpin, Rocketlauncher is a necessity. Do you like the front end GUI of Retroarch or do you like the lists and functionality of Rocketlauncher. Ultimately I think it comes down to preference. From HyperSpin it will just go to the game and back and that is what you really want. I think the biggest thing to get across to you though is that rocketlauncher will launch retroarch from command line so you will never see the GUI. This is very common in the HyperSpin world and something that is highly reccomended as Retroarch allows for a pretty standard controller setup. If you plan on using HyperSpin, you should use rocketlauncher + Retroarch. They are both front ends but Retroarch is designed with function in mind where as HyperSpin has been designed for flair and pizzazz. Retroarch and HyperSpin are not competitors as they are really different in execution.
It just launches the game and returns to hyperspin after it is done so there is no added layer. If you launch a game from HyperSpin using retroarch, you will never see retroarch. In order for rocketlauncher to be able to properly use Retroarch however, you will need to have Retroarch running on it's own outside of RL first so you really cannot skip setting it up either way. If you want to use HyperSpin, Rocketlauncher is more or less a necessity. For those people, there is no need of rocketlauncher. Many people use Retroarch as their front end as HyperSpin is often more work than it is worth. MAME and coin-op alike are welcome here!
